Family Photo Session

Families

Pet friendly photographer capturing family photos in Custer State Park.

If you’ve ever looked at family photos and thought, “How did they make it look that easy?” — here’s the truth: an unforgettable family photo session didn’t come from perfect outfits or Pinterest poses. They come from being present, letting go, and trusting the process.

Whether you’re booking your first family photography session or you’ve done this before, here are my top tips to make your experience meaningful—and yes, even enjoyable.

1. Let go of the idea of a perfect family photo session.

The most powerful images happen when you stop trying to control everything. Your kids don’t have to smile on command. You don’t need matching outfits. You just need to show up and be yourselves.

As a family photographer in the Black Hills my job is to gently guide you, not stage every second. When you’re relaxed, connection naturally follows—and that’s what we’re after.

2. Choose comfort over style.

Wear what makes you feel good and allows movement. Coordinating colors are great, but connection matters more than color palettes. Think soft textures, neutral tones, and outfits that feel like you.

3. Create margin in your family photo session day.

Running late or showing up rushed makes everyone feel tense. Leave space to breathe, feed the kids, and arrive calm. A little planning goes a long way in making your session feel peaceful, not pressured.

4. Remember the “why” for your family photo session.

This season—whatever it looks like—is already worth remembering. You’re booking this family pohto session session to freeze time, not impress anyone. Years from now, you’ll be so glad you said yes.

Final thought:

The best family photo session isn’t about smiling for the camera. They’re about being fully present with the people you love most.
