Winter Family Session Prep

Winter Tips/Tricks/ideas

Making the Most of Your Winter Session

Winter Sessions have quickly become some of my favorite types of sessions to do! They are beautiful, and the overall feeling is much different than summer photos. I love the look of the dormant trees and the crunchy leaves. While they are beautiful sessions, they are also cold! I think it is a good idea to do a little prepping beforehand.

When deciding on winter family outfits, think warmth

Warm outfits are the goal! Everyone will be much happier this way!

-Scarves, gloves, hats are the way to go (and they are all cute too)

-Add layers underneath your clothes (socks, long johns, extra shirts, etc.)

-Consider wearing a coat, even if you just wear it while we are readjusting, changing locations

-Consider wearing boots if we will be in snowy/muddy conditions

Bring extra warmth for the little ones

I always have a blanket on hand to warm up the little ones in the sun for a few moments. However, extra blankets for everyone are ideal! This will be what gets you to the end of your session, truly a lifesaver!

Snacks/Rewards

I think it is best to have a reward for the little ones! If they know there is a snack in the car for them or warm hot cocoa at home, they are more likely to participate. Also, who doesn’t love to warm up with hot chocolate!

Keep in mind with winter sessions

I don’t expect the kiddos to look at me the entire time! I love capturing the in-between moments and interactions, so don’t focus too much on this! You will love the real genuine smiles much more in the end!

Prepping you & your children

Here are a few things you can do to help your photos look even more spectacular!

Lint roll – I have a dog too, so I get it! Lint rolling clothes beforehand is the perfect way to make your clothes look crisp and clean.

Blow noses (getting a bit personal… i know!) – Have your babies blow/clean their noses! Boogies don’t look fabulous in the final images! Bring extra tissues as well, noses like run in the cold air!

Flexibility with winter weather

Being flexible with dates is key when working with cold weather/wind! While we can definitely work in 20-degree weather, sometimes the wind is just a bit too much! I strive to choose the warmest day possible for the session to make it the most enjoyable. So being open to rescheduling is an important factor with winter sessions.
